The European Politics research group at the Center for Comparative and International Studies at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, is seeking a PhD student for its project on “Constructing Europe’s Borders: Membership Discourses and European Integration” (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation).

The project traces and maps the transformation of the discourse on Europe’s borders and EU membership from 2004 to 2017, both in the European Union (EU) and in its contested neighbourhood. We code political claims made in parliamentary debates on European integration and use discourse network analysis to examine discursive coalitions, patterns, and transformations.

We expect the PhD student to participate in the coding of parliamentary debates (especially for the German-speaking countries of the EU) and in the data analysis. Funding is for three years. The gross salary is in the range of 47000-50000 CHF per year. The starting date is September 2017 (negotiable).

We are seeking political scientists with a very good Master’s degree, excellent command of English and German and strong methodological skills. You may apply with a nearly completed degree. Knowledge of additional languages and network analysis is an asset.

Please apply electronically at https://apply.refline.ch/845721/5323/pub/1/index.html. Your application should include (a) your CV, (b) a scan of your university diplomas (or transcripts), (c) a sample paper, and (d) the names, affiliations, and email addresses of two referees. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2017.

Informal inquiries may be addressed to Prof. Frank Schimmelfennig at
